A PhD Mummy of two, living and studying in Taiwan
As a Faculty member of higher nursing education institution in Indonesia, pursuing a PhD degree is compulsory. I work as an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), Indonesia. I was also an UNAIR’s ambassador for years. This duty enabled me to connect to every Professors/UNAIR’s guests and it helped me, to find further information related to the PhD degree and scholarship.
My life’s goal is personal and professional development growing equally. In a real life, it means that wherever I go for the PhD, my only daughter and son will be picked. For this reason, I should very well prepared and well-managed, and one of the most essential preparations was a scholarship: it should be a fully funded 4 years PhD study.
It was a long journey to reach the goal. I spent nearly 2.5 years for the PhD application and the scholarship. For example, I had received the unconditional offer letters for the PhD degree but failed in the scholarship applications. On the other hand, I had been accepted in the PhD program but the provided scholarship was only for 3 years while the curriculum of PhD program was set by the University for 4 years.
Fortunately, at the end of 2017, a Deputy from the Ministry of Education, the Republic of Indonesia gave a speech about the urgency of Faculty members studying abroad and the scholarships offered by neighbor countries for Indonesian. Bearing those abstract thoughts and thousands of questions, I found the answer: I should go to Taiwan for the PhD and get the scholarship!
I applied to the 5 Universities in Taiwan for the PhD in nursing degree and decided that KMU as the most suitable for me (and the kids). Several reasons related to the KMU are:
(1) Kaohsiung is the second biggest city in Taiwan and it is the same with my home city, Surabaya. The weather of these two cities, more or less almost similar. These two points helped me and the kids to successfully adapt with the new environment.
(2) There were positive impressions when two of Professors from KMU visited Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga in 2016. Later in the late of 2018, KMU and UNAIR became a Sister-School. Even though I was not a Faculty who directly get involved in the process of the Sister-School between KMU-UNAIR, the feeling of grateful, is always blooming.
(3) School of Nursing KMU has a great Professor in Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). I would like to say that Professor Chiu-Chu Lin, RN, Ph.D. is one of the earliest Faculties in the School of Nursing KMU and many Professors in Nursing around the Universities in Taiwan are connecting to her. As a PhD student working under her supervision, I proud of and thank her: I can finish almost all the requirement for the PhD degree in Nursing, including the SCI paper/publication in 6 semesters (3 years).

Kesempatan melanjutkan pendidikan S2 dan S3 keperawatan di Kaohsiung Medical University Taiwan.
Dalam upaya mencetak tenaga perawat yang kompeten dan professional, Fakultas Keperawatan menjalin hubungan kerja sama dengan beberapa Universitas di luar negeri . Hubungan Kerjasama ini dimaksudkan untuk memfasilitasi minat perawat Indonesia yang akan melanjutkan pendidikan ke jenjang pendidikan yang lebih tinggi di luar negeri.
Pada hari Kamis (27/10/2016), head of research development & global affair division Associate Professor Yung-Mei Yang, PhD., RN dan Pei-Chao Lin, PhD., R.N dari Kaohsiung Medical University (KMU) Taiwan datang ke Fakultas Keperawatan. Kunjungan tersebut bertujuan untuk memfasilitasi perawat-perawat yang berminat untuk melanjutkan pendidikan baik ke jejang S2 maupun S3 ke KMU Taiwan. Kedatangan dua orang Professor disambut hangat oleh Bapak Dr. Ah.Yusuf., S.Kp.M.Kes (Wakil Dekan III Fakultas Keperawatan), Ibu Ira Suarilah., S.Kp. M.Sc (Faculty Ambassador) serta Student ambassador 2016 yaitu Rahmadanti Nur Fadilla & dan Kusnul Chotimah.
Kegiatan berlangsung di Ruang Rapim I Fakultas Keperawatan dimulai pukul 09.00 sd. 12.00 WIB dan dihadiri oleh sejumlah 25 calon mahasiwa S2 dan S3 yang berasal dari institusi mitra dari Fakultas Keperawatan yakni Stikes Ngudia Husada Madura, Stikes Pemkab Jombang , Stikes Icsada Bojonegoro dan freshgraduate s1 keperawatan 2016 yang sedang menyiapkan diri untuk melamar beasiswa LPDP 2017.
Acara dimulai dengan perkenalan dari kedua tamu dan seluruh peserta yang hadir dilanjutkan dengan presentasi profil University kedua belah pihak. Selanjutnya, Professor Yung-Mei Yang, PhD., RN Professor memaparkan program Magister Nursing Science (MNS) dan Ph.D Nursing. Program MNS (S2 keperawatan) dapat ditempuh dalam masa studi 2 tahun dan Ph.D selama 3tahun dengan rincian 2 tahun perkuliahan dan 1tahun mengerjakan thesis. Hal yang sangat menarik bagi 25 pelamar S2 dan S3 yang hadir pada kesempatan tersebut adalah KMU menyediakan 4 macam beasiswa untuk mahasiswa asing. Serta untuk mahasiswa Ph.D selama 1tahun terakhir masa studi yaitu mengerjakan tugas akhir, bisa dikerjakan atau pulang ke Negara asalnya dan proses bimbingan dengan supervisor dapat dilakukan melalui e-mail.
Seperti umumnya para peminat studi ke luar negeri, kendala utama yang seringkali menjadi ganjalan atau barrier adalah kecakapan dalam bahasa Inggris. KMU melalui penjelasan yang disampaikan oleh Profesor Pei-Chao Lin, PhD., R.N paham betul akan hal tersebut. KMU menjanjikan garansi Unconditional offer letter atau Letter of Acceptance (LoA) serta Supervisor willingness letter untuk calon mahasasiwa PhD kepada pelamar yang hadir pada saat itu. Jaminnan LoA diberikan dengan perjanjian pelamar dapat memenuhi pra-syarat bahasa inggris yang diminta dalam waktu 6 bulan kemudian. Adapun prayarat bahasa yang diminta oleh KMU adalah ITP Toefl 500, CBT 173, iBT 61 dan IELTS 4.5 atau TOEIC 600. Pendaftaran untuk program Master dan Ph.D dimulai bulan Nopember 2016 sd. Maret 2017.
Kemudahan yang ditawarkan oleh KMU kepada calon mahasiswa S2 danS3 dari Indonesia untuk dapat melanjutkan pendidikan di LN merupakan kesempatan emas yang sangat berharga. Profesor Yung-Mei Yang, PhD., RN menjelaskan secara rinci bahwa pada tahun 2017 merupakan tahun pertama KMU menyelenggarakan program Ph.D nursing untuk internasional students. Untuk enrollment 2017 ini, Kuota Ph.D dibuka sebanyak 36 kursi dan program master sebanyak 55 kursi dengan banyak pilihan peminatan.
Dari pemaparan kedua Profesor dari KMU Taiwan dapat disimpulkan bahwa bagi siapapun baik perawat pendidik maupun perawat clinical practitioner bahkan perawat freshgrduate memiliki peluang besar untuk dapat diterima di KMU Taiwan. Dengan berbekal LoA atau unconditional offer letter, para calon mahasiswa Master dan Ph.D dapat segera memasukan aplikasi beasiswa LPDP dan atau beasiwa BUDI LN 2017.
